Overview

DualCor cPC: The Tale of Two Devices and Two Operating Systems

Picture in a perfect world where a cellphone and a tablet pc co-existed on one single device running dual operating systems. The folks at DualCor may be the first to marry these two technologies into a single device called the cPC. It’s not clear as to what the letters “cPC’ stands for but if I had to guess, “c” stands for “cellphone” and “pc” would stand for “personal computing”.

The newly start-up company DualCor Technology claims that they’ve successfully combined a Windows Pocket PC Phone with a Windows XP Tablet PC into a compact handheld device measuring 6.5 x 3.3 x 1.2 inches. The Tablet PC side of the device runs Microsoft XP Tablet OS sporting a 1.5GHz Via C7-M processor, 1GB of DDR 2 DRAM memory and a 40GB hard drive.

The Pocket PC Phone side of the device features the Intel XScale processor running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone OS. It has its own 1GB of Flash storage memory and 128MB of DRAM.

The large 5-inch touch screen and hard drive are shared between the Tablet PC and Pocket PC. There are also two USB 2.0 type A ports, one USB 2.0 type B port and a CompactFlash Type II slot. The cPC should run for about three hours in PC mode and 8-12 hours as a smartphone.

The DualCor cPC is schedule for release in March 2006 during the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. The target price is set at $1,500.
